Performance Sports are activities and events tailored specifically to skills and functions that come naturally to certain dog breeds. Below we have listed the AKC performance events that Rat Terriers are eligible to participate in.
FastCAT
FastCAT is a timed 100 yard dash where dogs chase a lure (plastic bag that simulates prey). Their time/speed is used to calculate points, which accumulated to earn titles and rankings.
FastCAT is derived from Lure Coursing for sighthounds. All breeds and mixes are eligible to participate.
Most Rat Terriers take to this sport with lots of enthusiasm!
This is a beginner-friendly sport, but it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules and safety requirements for you and your dog.
ScentWork
Another beginner friendly sport, dogs are trained to detect and locate specific odors (essential oils).
Coursing Ability Test (CAT)
Coursing Ability Test (CAT), like Lure Coursing (for sighthounds) is open to all breeds and mixes, and dogs run alone.
In this sport, dogs chase a lure ( a plastic bag that simulates prey) over a 600 yard course with several turns. Titles are earned based on the quantity of successful runs a dog has completed.
EarthDog
EarthDog is a test of a terrier's ability to go to ground and work quarry (rats). The dog must navigate a 30 foot long, 9 inch by 9 inch tunnel underground, locate the quarry, and work (bark, dig, whine, scratch, etc) all with specific stringent time requirements. This sport can take some time to get the hang of but is extremely rewarding!
